The islands gained international fame in the 19th century when Charles Darwin visited them during his voyage on the HMS Beagle. Darwin’s observations of the islands’ diverse species played a crucial role in the development of his theory of evolution by natural selection. In the 20th century, the Galápagos were designated as a national park and UNESCO World Heritage site, recognizing their ecological significance and the need for conservation.
