A Brief History of Galapagos

The Galapagos Islands were discovered by the Spanish explorer Fray Tomas de Berlanga in 1535. Initially, they were a remote and largely uninhabited archipelago, with their isolation fostering a unique ecosystem. The islands gained international fame in the 19th century when Charles Darwin visited them during his voyage on the HMS Beagle. Darwin’s observations of the islands’ diverse species played a crucial role in the development of his theory of evolution by natural selection. In the 20th century, the Galapagos were designated as a national park and UNESCO World Heritage site, recognizing their ecological significance and the need for conservation.
